Chutzpah, Schmaltz, Whimsy and Realism: The Art of Deborah Schafer

DESCRIPTION:  Deborah Schafer’s paintings were first shown at the museum in 2005 as part of a study of Boris Schatz and the Bezalel School. That exhibition launched Schafer, a descendant of Schatz, on an artistic journey of exploration.

“…on one wall was my grandmother’s weaving, under glass were my grandfather’s graphics and Uncle Avraham’s painting.  Cases were filled with cousin Zahara’s sculpture, cousin Lilik’s silk-screens and more.  Among works by family members I wished I could have known better, hung my own work. The profound effect this experience had upon me came as quite a surprise.”
